An Arts and Crafts family home with Morris & Co. interiors, set in a beautiful hillside garden
A Late Victorian family home brought vividly to life in this gem of the Arts & Crafts Movement.
Standen is hidden at the end of a quiet Sussex lane with breathtaking views over the High Weald and Weirwood Reservoir. The design of the house is a monument to the combined genius of architect Philip Webb and his friend William Morris. All the big names of the Arts & Crafts period are represented, including ceramics by William De Morgan and metalwork by W. A. S. Benson.
ahem...I'm not sure Andrex was available in the 1920's!!
Externally, it's not the most beautiful house in the world but definitely worth a visit on a miserable Wednesday afternoon.
Before I go, here's a quick card for my friends Tom & Mary who amazingly celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this week. I am entering it for this week's Clean & Simple sketch challenge.
Hope you're all having a good weekend.
Until next time.

(PS What the dickens IS going on with Blogger? Cannot for the life of me space my photo's equidistantly..is that a word?)

I love William De Morgan and William Morris, I'd be in heaven at Standen. Love the tapestry wall hanging, that stunning carpet and the loo!
ReplyDeleteMy family home was built to the Arts and Crafts ethos and there's some stunning architectural details I keep meaning to photo for the blog.
Gorgeous anniversary card. x
NICE post title!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing building!!! I'd love to have a druibble around there!XXX
What a lovely house, I'm a Pre-Raphaelite/Arts and Crafts fan too so I would love a nosy round Standen.
ReplyDeletePretty card too!
PS. I struggle with spacing on Blogger too, The preview and "live" versions are often not how the posts look as I type them, and editing doesn't seem to make any difference! No idea why that should be... xxxxxx
Love your punny title - reminds me of Adam Ant (are you old enough to remember him and that song?!). And I love your anniversary card - we won't be called on to make too many 65th anniversary cards, so it's important to make them extra special, as you've done so well here!
ReplyDeleteYour posts always inspire me Fiona and I never know what's coming next! I think I'll have to take a little mosey down to Standen - it looks wonderful. Can't help with the spacing issue but now and then I'll type a comment and then it will vanish! Very annoying although my fingers are getting very thin with all the extra exercise! Vicky x
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA that toilet! But aside from that, how beautiful...

Amazing building, I would love a wander round there, not so sure of the toilet though!
ReplyDeleteLovely card and the colours are gorgeous. xxx
Wow what a beautiful property. Your photos are great Fiona.
ReplyDeleteI'm just the same... I studied in Nottingham for 3 years and never visited the cathedral. Now I wish I had.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend.
Hugs

(My sister is going to be a Grandma any day soon... makes me a Great Aunt - how old do I feel?)
