Instagram Colour Lovers Photo Walk

There was lots going on last week.  Not only did we celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday, it was also the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, St George's Day, Earth Day and the 13th World Wide Instameet, which I'd signed up for a few weeks ago. (even though I'm not even on Instagram... shush, mum's the word!)

I've been reading photographer Xanthe Berkeley's blog for some years now and when I saw she was organizing a colour lover's photo walk, I jumped at the chance to take some cool, vibrant photos in hip, happening Shoreditch.

Lots of like minded ladies and I met at the Hoxton Hotel for a quick cuppa before heading off around the local area which is awash with colour and street art.  Most of my fellow photographers were professional bloggers and Instagrammers equipped with the latest phones and cameras and to be honest I felt a bit of a fraud tagging along with my trusty ancient entry level Nikon.  Lots of techy jargon went straight over my head... 'boomeranging' and 'stride by's'...what the hell were these?  But by the end of the walk I was beginning to understand.

Xanthe provided some amazing colourful balloons as props and these featured heavily in the shots taken...... we created quite a spectacle for passers by to observe!

It was a fun morning and top marks go to Xanthe, so dedicated to her craft that she stoicly removed her jacket, in what felt like sub zero temperatures, in order to showcase her gorgeous pink frock for the snaps.  Me, I kept my hat, coat and gloves on!

Are you on Instagram?  I'm deliberating about getting involved.  I don't do facebook or Twitter, do I really need another account?  Is it easy to manage? (...for a luddite like me)   I'd appreciate any thoughts on it below.

Thanks for looking and have a great week!

  2. What an absolutely brilliant way to spend a day! I love these photos, so cheery and bursting with colour. For an "entry level Nikon" your photos are always spot on.
Saturday was a gorgeous day but you're right, so bastard cold!
I did have an Instagram account ( being nagged into it) but as I only have a Pay-As-You-Go mobile and can't use the Internet unless I'm at home on the PC so could only access it through Jon's phone so didn't bother. I don't get all the hashtags. xxx

  4. Sounds like an inspiring morning, and your trusty Nikon did you proud - love your photos, so much colour!
I am on Instagram, and it should really be right up my street as I'm always snapping away like you, but not so much with my phone as it turns out. Want to be enthusiastic but so far just feels like another thing to do... not a social media natural! xx

    1. Thanks Tracey. I don't use my phone for photo taking much either...it's because I don't think of it as a 'proper' camera..crazy I know. X

  5. Sounds like an amazing day, and obviously yellow is the color of the moment. I love the photo of the feet and legs! I'm on Instagram, but I don't have a smartphone yet so I don't post photos. However, you can still follow people and comment, and it is fun and quick and pretty easy.

  6. Fiona, you certainly don't need to apologise for your camera or lack of techie knowledge, you have a wonderful eye for a photo and great skill. These pics are fab, full of vibrant colour and capturing all the sights and details of your day. It sounds right up your street.
Can't help you with Instagram - don't do it, and as you can see, at the moment, I am barely keeping up with my blog or Facebook at the moment. Lots of people seem to like it though. Xxx

  8. What happy photos of beautiful ladies all having such a great time. I am not an instagrammer, as above, I think it would stop me from making because I would get taken over by the tech but those photos are something else! Jo x

  11. I love street art and your photos are brilliant. Those balloons with all the extra colourful things hanging from them made awesome props, I would have wanted to take those home with me. I have facebook but as for twitter and all the others I haven't tried.
