Tarted up Tat

I'm back today with a couple of upcycled items. I wish there were tales of wild weekends or frenzied chazzing but since my last post it's been strictly work and mundane matters.

Both of these ideas were nicked from other bloggers and I'm hoping that by reading this I may inspire one of you in turn, to have a go at tarting up something. Blogging is so great for sharing ideasdontcha find?

Take one bog standard table lamp with a smattering of insect poo  (gather some wonderful inspiration here and here)

Throw some pretty fabric and pom-poms at it, et voila!
I have to admit that after searching chazza's fruitlessly for weeks for suitable floral fabric, I gave in and bought it in C & H. Not quite the thrifty approach I normally like to employ but I was just too darned impatient to wait any longer. The bias binding which hides the joins was knocking around in my sewing basket.  It was still a makeover for under a fiver and I like it so much more than before.

My next recycle is an old garden sieve as I'd seen this fab idea here.  Again, I looked for months in junk shops and auctions to no avail, but then I came across this one at a 'vintage' garden furniture place nearby and couldn't resist.  It wasn't a bargain, although I did manage to knock them down a couple of quid.   I think it looks lovely framing this pink diascia on the front of my house, plus it hides the ugly air brick without preventing ventilation. What do you reckon?

I'm linking this post to Junkin' Joe before catching up with last week's episode of The Returned.  Are any of you watching ?  I'm hooked.

A bientot.

  1. Both recycling projects are brilliant, Fiona. The lamp looks so pretty and casts a lovely warm glow, and who can resist a pom pom trim? The garden sieve is a great idea, very effective. Pinching ideas is what it's all about - sharing the inspiration. It's not plagiarism - it's creative use of resources!
Apart from The Apprentice, I'm not watching anything on telly. I always forget things are on - useless, aren't I?! xxxx

  2. I love the sieve idea - the picture looks like something from Country Living - brilliant for a couple of squadoodlys. LOVE The Returned - we have so many theories popping up in our house - all of which have been wrong so far - what's going on with Victor??? Jane x

  3. Brilliant, both projects.
Love that lamp and the pom poms are super.
The flower in the sieve is gorgeous too.
    Well done you.

  4. Hi Fiona, you've done a marvellous job on both of them. I love your lamp, so pretty and cheery and not a speck of fly poop in sight - hard to believe it's the same lamp actually. The old sieve looks charming too. I've heard about The Returned, it's yet to make its way across the sea. I don't watch much telly (I'm the only person I know not to watch an episode of Downtown Abbey! Is that even how you spell Downtown!), but when I'm hooked on something I'm hooked!
    See ya x

  5. Two fantastic remakes, that lamp and the sleeve look like something from a fancy home magazine.
Hope you get a break from work soon! xxx

  6. Love your lamp! Is it tricky getting the fabric on flat? I've a few speckled shades that could do with a makeover - tried to clean one the other day and made it 10x worse! The old sieve is a brilliant idea too, so much more lovely than an air brick.
Haven't been watching The Returned, regretting that now, do like having a good bit of telly to look forward to on a sunday night x

  7. These are fantastic crafty projects. I know that frustration waiting for the right fabric to turn up, but what you ended up with is great. Love the colour. xxxx

  8. Love both the lampshade and the garden sieve ideas - they both look fantastic. What sort of glue did you use on the lampshade? I'm only asking because I have a couple of lampshades I'd quite like to jazz up.

The beginning of The Returned somewhat passed me by and I rather regret that now as it seems to be a programme I would've enjoyed. Let's hope it gets repeated sometime soon.
